Most likely because it could cause a mutation to occur which could be beneficial to them but the environment they live in may not support the mutation, hope this helps.

Genetic engineering can be benefical to both plants and animals because it can make them resistant to some pests and diseases. Genetic enginerring can be harmful to both plants and animals because the release of genetically alltered organisms in the environment can increase suffering to humans, animals, and plants.
